Exam Requirements 

Applicants for the uniform CPA exam in Tennessee must complete a baccalaureate or higher degree at a regionally accredited institution that includes at least 18 semester hours in upper division accounting coursework. 

Licensure Requirements

Applicants for a CPA license in Tennessee must complete at least 150 semester hours of postsecondary education, including completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Of those, 30 hours must be in accounting courses (24 hours in upper division accounting courses) and 24 hours must be in business courses.

Completion of Georgia Southern University’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership does NOT meet educational requirements for Tier 1 teacher/leader certification in Tennessee. The ILL is a three-year renewable administrator license. To qualify for this license type, out-of-state candidates must meet the following requirements:  1. Hold an advanced degree from a regionally accredited college or university (see transcript information below) 2. Have at least three (3) years of qualifying pre-K-12 education working experience documented on the experience verification form; 3. Submit evidence of an active administrator license from a state other than Tennessee or provide verification of completion of an instructional leader program as evidenced by a completed recommendation form (see the Instructional Leader recommendation form in the Licensure Forms section here); 4. Submit qualifying scores on the required assessment as defined in Professional Assessments for Tennessee Educators Policy (5.102);

State licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is not required to work in the field of engineering. However, many employment opportunities require a PE license.

Georgia Southern’s Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringBachelor of Science in Computer EngineeringBachelor of Science in Construction EngineeringBachelor of Science in Electrical EngineeringBachelor of Science in Manufacturing EngineeringBachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering are EAC-ABET-accredited.

The minimum requirements for a PE license include completion of a BS degree in Engineering from an EAC-ABET accredited engineering program; successful completion of the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Exam; successful completion of the Professional Engineer (PE) Exam; and 4-years of work experience as specified by the state’s licensing board.

Completion of Georgia Southern’s Bachelor of Science Programs in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering meet the educational requirements to begin the licensure process in Tennessee, by providing the coursework necessary to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination. Software Engineering does not have a specific PE examination. It is typically recommended that candidates sit for their FE exam toward the end of their senior year, or soon after graduation.

Georgia Southern’s embedded Surveying-Geomatics certificate meets the educational requirement to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination to become a land surveyor intern or land surveyor in training (LSIT) which is the first step in becoming a PLS in Tennessee.

To apply for a professional land surveyor license (PLS) in Tennessee, applicants must meet the state requirements: 

“On April 4, 2024, Public Chapter 0650 was signed into law which made the following changes to the five (5) licensing pathways currently available:Those with applications submitted prior to 4/4/2024 will follow the former requirements.ALL progressive experience is now under direct supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor. 4) Experience can be accrued prior to taking the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam.A Land Surveyor in Training (PLSIT) certificate is a prerequisite to Land Surveyor licensure. The experience obtained as a Land Surveyor in Training (PLSIT) can be applied toward the total experience required for the Land Surveyor license. Applicants with an active license in at least one other state or jurisdiction may apply by Comity without first acquiring the Land Surveyor in Training (PLSIT) certificate.The Board approved coursework required for Pathway 5 (HS Diploma or GED + Experience) has increased to 18 hours.Board approval is no longer required to take the Tennessee State Specific (TS) exam. All exams (Tennessee State Specific (TS), Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS), Fundamentals of Surveying(FS)) are now decoupled from required experience; proof of passage is required to be submitted alongside your application. You may register for the Tennessee State Specific Examination with PSI.”

A 5-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER), or that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 1 year of diversified interior design experience; or A 4-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER), or that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 2 years of diversified interior design experience; or A 3-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER), or that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 3 years of diversified interior design experience; or A 2-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER), or that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 4 years of diversified interior design experience. Substantial equivalency means comparable in program content and level of educational experience but not necessarily identical in format or method of delivery. It implies that the graduates of these programs possess the necessary competencies to begin professional engineering practice at the entry level. 

Passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Examination is also required for licensure in the state of Tennessee.

To earn your Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Certification via “Pathway 1,” which is offered in the Georgia Southern Department of Psychology, you must: a) Earn a Master’s degree from an Association of Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) verified program, b) Obtain 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, and c) Pass the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) BCBA Certification Exam. The MS – Psychology (Behavior Analysis Concentration) degree provides the Association of Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) verified coursework. In addition, through some elective course options, students could begin accruing supervised field work hours, however, it is not guaranteed that 2,000 may be earned while enrolled in the program. The BACB BCBA Certification Exam would be taken after students complete the MS – Psychology (Behavior Analysis Concentration) degree, and is scheduled directly through the BACB.
